The Stench of Rockville Politics Permeates the City

There is no greater distance in politics than
the distance from Washington D.C. to Rockville.
While it is only a short 15-mile jaunt from the nation's
Capitol to the city of Rockville, politically speaking,
Rockville might as well be on the moon.
Or, if you've watched any video streaming of Rockville City Council meetings, or attended one of these meetings, you will come to the conclusion that politics in Rockville doesn't necessarily take place on the moon, but definitely takes place inside Bozo's Big Top Circus.
For all that is said about politics in D.C., much of it bad, it cannot compare to the absolute acrimony, lack of professionalism, horrifyingly poor taste and just plain puerile salaciousness that permeates Rockville.
With a city so close to the Capitol, one might think that some of the decorum would rub off on the city fathers in Rockville, but alas that's not true.The differences in the type of politics practiced in the district and in Rockville were never plainer than two events of the last two weeks.
Down in the district federal representatives including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Sen. Ben Cardin, Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Donna Edwards showed up to a packed event on a day when health care was being debated on the Hill to thank supporters, bring them up to date on the floor vote for health care and, of course, to ask for more money.
In Congress, those left debating the health care reform package did so in front of cameras, arguing occasionally with each other and demeaning each other when the opportunity was present. But afterwards they shook hands and went about their business.
While the debate appeared mean-spirited and in some cases was, there was still the understanding that it was a public debate carried out in public and whether or not you agreed with someone across the aisle, you'd better at least show some respect because you're going to have to work together on a lot of different issues during the next year or two.
The Congress has had trouble with that concept in the last decade or two as many from both sides of the aisle gravitate toward the polar extremes, take to calling their opponents all kinds of venomous things and generally spewing forth a poisonous bile that undermines every attempt at bi-partisanship, brotherly love, peace, understanding and the democratic process.
So imagine how surprisingly ludicrous the city of Rockville appears.
Council members there, who depend on the public to get elected and the media to disseminate their information cannot even pronounce citizens' names correctly - even after being corrected several times.
They routinely forget how many media outlets there are in the county - a fact I actually can understand since one newspaper, which has its offices in Rockville, has only been around for 155 years.
I can understand how people like John Britton
can forget that. He's only 54.
Watching representatives from the two bodies in action
this week showcased the differences in the politicians.
Downtown every representative is mindful of the citizenry, even if privately they don't agree with what each individual citizen has to say. They smile, they carry themselves with aplomb and when confronted by members of the media, even when taken off balance, take the interruptions in stride and with a smile.
In Rockville it's more like watching hungry alley cats fighting over the last scrap from a dead, thoroughly chewed rodent.
There is little politeness, and less decorum. I have watched the last two council sessions from the comfort of computer by video stream where the stench is slightly sanitized and the immature behavior is a step further away.
Still, I can't stomach city councilmen lashing out at a high school teacher, saying "Your students deserve better than that," and "I'm disappointed for your students," because the teacher had legitimate concerns about the Rockville City Council.
Actually, it is ultimately the citizens of Rockville who should be ashamed of Piotr Gajewski who made those comments, and the entire council for their childish public behavior.
I'd say Rockville deserved better, but then again we voted these people into office in the first place.

during a public forum

Rockville city council members defended their recent disagreement and behavior as a result of voiced resident disapproval, before attending to city agenda Tuesday night at Rockville City Hall.
Several residents used Citizen’s Forum, a segment in the three hour meeting that allowed citizens to address the mayor and council, to voice their disapproval of the mayor and council members’ manners and conduct at the July 13 city council meeting.
“We still see explosive and corrosive relationships between members of this body,” said Mark Pierzchala, who declared his candidacy for mayor in January. “This is but the latest of several incidents, and this behavior gets in the way of business.”
Councilman John Britton wrote an opinion piece defending the $1.7 million pay raise for city employees, given in the 2010 fiscal year budget, and criticized Councilwoman Ann Robbins for voting against the compensation increase on a June 2 local blog.
Britton forwarded his piece via email to City Manager Scott Ullery, who then forwarded the email to several other city employees, which eventually led to the conflict among the council.
Drew Powell, a community activist, addressed the council members about their behavior. Powell said that Britton had every right to write a position paper, however, it was wrong to make “use of city resources to pass along a highly political document to employees, who were to remain apolitical, thereby compromising those employees.”
“As we enter the upcoming election season, let’s all try to keep respect and civility at the top of our respective agendas,” Powell said to the mayor and council.
Randy Alton, a 35-year Montgomery County Public Schools educator, said the council should stay on the issues.
“Off-issues don’t help the purpose,” he said. “The issues are reality, fees are reality, taxes are reality. “
Alton was identified with Robbins as being an opponent to the employee compensation package in Britton’s position piece.
Alton did not comment on the council’s recent behavior or political problems. He spent three minutes talking about the budget, the significant increase in his water bill, rising taxes, and the importance of refraining from layoffs.
Alton’s comments were apparently met with rancor from Councilman Piotr Gajewski, who not only disagreed with him, but “attacked his credentials as a teacher,” said Council member Anne Robbins.
Other residents used their three minutes to express their gratitude for the work being done toward health care, housing and local economy.
Several others offered information on an upcoming agenda, which would initiate filing of a sectional map amendment to change housing zones for a property on 224 Elizabeth Ave., if the council voted to authorize it.
In response to the Citizen’s Forum, which mentioned health care, housing, local economy, budget, taxes, and community aid, the only issue that was addressed by all the mayor and council, was the issue about their recent behavior.

Taxpayers Money Wasted on Kentlands

Dear Editor:
I am confused as to why you are so against the housing of city employees in city-owned homes. The people who occupy them work very hard for this city and on numerous occasions respond to incidents throughout the city during early morning hours. How many people who do not work for the city [and] live in The Colonnade and other apartments in Kentlands are accepting H.O.C. vouchers (the real waste of taxpayer money)?
You along with many other Kentlands residents (including Council Member Ryan Spiegel, a young lawyer from Baltimore who has barely lived here for more than five years) feel that taxpayer money is being “wasted” on these homes. I think having the city commit $50,000 to the “Kentlands Downtown District” is an absurd amount of money “to breath life into the Kentlands Business District.” It is neither the taxpayer nor the city’s fault if a stay-at-home mom opens up a business that flops in less than a year. In a free market society you all should be ashamed for wasting $50,000 of the taxpayers’ money towards a neighborhood that is already doing quite well. Further, the last thing this city needs is a developer with a Realtor wife who just so happen to be Kentlands residents as mayor. Clearly, we see where their intere$t are.
Olde Towne Gaithersburg has seen many changes throughout the years. Currently I feel it needs the most attention. The city should be using the $50,000 towards “breathing life” into a community that has been in existence long before Mr. Kent himself lived in Kentlands. Olde Towne Gaithersburg has always been and always will be
“The Downtown.”

BALTIMORE - Disturbed by the heavily redacted documents turned over by the Maryland State Police (MSP), which nonetheless reiterate the total lack of any suspected crimes, the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland today joined with our clients to demand full disclosure and to expose the dangerous and seemingly haphazard way in which state police spies entered the names and personal information of peaceful activists into their criminal intelligence database as suspected terrorists. More questions are raised than answers provided by the pages of blacked out text and scanty information contained in the documents thus far released by the MSP.
"What we have received is a long way from full disclosure," said David Rocah, Staff Attorney for the ACLU of Maryland. "Full pages are blacked out, and little information is provided that allows people to understand why their names were listed. The Maryland State Police must finally do a thorough and public accounting of this First Amendment fiasco."
