Freedom of speech and truth
One of the earliest Western defense of freedom of expression is "Areopagitica" (1644) by the British philosopher John Milton. Milton wrote in reaction to an attempt by the English parliament to prevent "seditious, unreliable, unreasonable and unlicensed pamphlets".
