Citi Gets $12.5B in Cash From Investors As Hefty Writedowns

NEW YORK (AP) -- Citigroup Inc. has gotten $12.5 billion in much-needed cash from a batch of investors as it posted its first quarterly loss in 16 years in the fourth quarter, when the bank's mortgage portfolio lost $18.1 billion in value.
The nation's largest bank, which lost $9.83 billion in the last three months
of 2007, also cut its dividend to boost its cash levels.
The $12.5 billion investment from outside investors included $6.88 billion from the Government of Singapore Investment Corp. for a 4 percent stake. Other investors were Capital Research Global Investors, Capital World Investors, the Kuwait Investment Authority, the New Jersey Division of Investment, shareholder Prince Alwaleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia and former chief executive Sanford Weill and his family foundation.
The $12.5 billion adds to the $7.5 billion that Citi got in November from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority in exchange for a 4.9 percent stake in the company.
The moves were widely anticipated on Wall Street after months of scrutiny over the bank's ratio of cash to debt. That ratio weakened when Citigroup lost money in mortgage-backed bond instruments called collateralized debt obligations and brought $49 billion in hemorrhaging funds known as structured investment vehicles onto its books...

Merrill Lynch to Get $6.6 Billion
3 Foreign Funds to Invest a Combined $6.6 Billion in Merrill Lynch
NEW YORK (AP) -- Merrill Lynch & Co. said Tuesday that it is getting a cash infusion of $6.6 billion from three foreign investment funds.
The Korean Investment Corp., Kuwait Investment Authority and Mizuho Corporate Bank will receive a special class of stock for their combined $6.6 billion investment. All will be passive investors and none will have any rights of control.
Both the Korean and Kuwaiti investment groups are owned by the state governments. Mizuho is a Japanese investment bank.
This is the second round of capital raising Merrill Lynch has announced in the past month. On Dec. 24, Merrill Lynch said it would sell a stake in itself of up to $5 billion to Singapore's state-run Temasek Holdings and an additional $1.2 billion stake to Davis Selected Advisers.
Merrill Lynch has been raising capital after losing billions of dollars on bad bets in the mortgage market. Rising delinquencies and defaults among mortgages have forced banks to write down the value of bonds and debt backed by the troubled loans, and look for new cash to boost balance sheets.
Merrill Lynch is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter earnings Thursday. It is widely expected the investment bank will post its second consecutive quarterly loss and take further write-downs, potentially exceeding the $7.9 billion taken in the third quarter
