Harith al-Obeidi ~ "the martyr of the whole of Iraq"

A truly noble human being & "A divine heart of awareness"
who bravely promoted human rights for all Iraqis and for
all peoples everywhere throughout the planet. May he R.I.P.

The moderate leader of the largest Sunni bloc in parliament was assassinated Friday after delivering a sermon at a Baghdad mosque, a killing that could set back efforts to reconcile differences between the two Muslim sects before national elections.

Harith al-Obeidi, 47, was an outspoken advocate for prisoners' rights, one of the most divisive issues in relations between the disaffected Sunni minority and the Shiite-led government. Recently picked as leader of the Accordance Front, Harith al-Obeidi was seen as a moderate able to make peace among the bloc`s groups.

He was killed a day after colleagues said he called on parliament to summon interior and defense ministry officials to answer allegations of torture in Iraqi jails. Although most detainees are Sunni, al-Obeidi promoted human rights for all Iraqis, even followers of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.Colleagues noted that al-Obeidi visited both
Sunni and Shiite prisoners and was passionate
in calling for their fair treatment.

Ahmed al-Masoudi, a lawmaker loyal to al-Sadr,
said al-Obeidi angrily denounced prisoner abuse
during Thursday's parliamentary session.

"What happened to Dr. Harith al-Obeidi
might have a connection to what is going on
inside the Iraqi detention centers,
including brutal torture and rape," he said.

Al-Obeidi complained about the abuses in
his final sermon on Friday, saying
"nobody dares to tell the ruler that
such imprisonment is wrong."

Sunni lawmaker Dhafir al-Ani applauded
al-Obeidi's political moderation.
"Al-Obeidi established a school of moderation
inside the parliament. He expressed his position
with courage and without any fear," he said.

divine retribution & vengeance out from the grave.Iraqi Vice President Adil Abdul-Mahdi told Iraqiya TV after the funeral that al-Obeidi was "the martyr of the whole of Iraq."

"Al-Obeidi was one of the pillars of the political process and the political moderation. He had an important role in parliament," Abdul-Mahdi said.

Safiya was born in 1965 to a Lebanese mother. Her father, Sheikh Taleb al-Souhail al-Tamimi, was himself also the leader of the Banu Tamim tribe. He fled Iraq with his family to Lebanon after the Baath Party coup of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr in 1968. Safia later lived in Amman, Washington and Paris.

Sheikh al-Tamimi was assassinated in Beirut in 1994, reportedly after planning a coup against Saddam Hussein which was foiled when the United States allegedly tipped off Hussein. Safiya took over her father's opposition role, arming opposition Iraqi groups, editing the opposition newspaper Al Manar Al Arabi and becoming the advocacy director for the International Alliance for Justice, a Paris-based human rights organisation.

During negotiations over the Constitution of Iraq she called for Islam to be made "a main source" for legislation and not "the main source". She complained that the gains in women's rights since 1959 had been lost.

In November 2005 she was reported to have started a list - the "Iraqi Pledge Coalition" - with other Iraqi Women to campaign in the forthcoming elections to amend Article 39 of the Constitution of Iraq which deals with personal status law. However, following the elections she was nominated a member of the Council of Representatives of Iraq for the secular Iraqi National List of Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.

In September 2007 she was reported to have left the Iraqi National List grouping in the Council of Representatives, complaining that Allawi was highhanded and the party lacked strategic vision.

Putting it all in perspective, after hotly pursuing the bio of Iraqi women like Safia Taleb al-Suhail (and Raja Habib Khuzai), looking for every and any chink in a well-manicured and polished armor it becomes clear that Suhail, and others like her, have put themselves very much at risk in their genuine pursuit of human rights and women's rights ... and have been horribly and vilely betrayed by BushCo ... the worst of which, for example, is self-realization by women like Khuzai of what has happened.

By following the chronology of their appearances you can see the plunge of high hopes into realization of the truth of the betrayal, followed by a response like that of Khuzai that she no longer wants to live in the New Iraq.

Given the fate of many courageous Iraqi women who were either urged or bullied into Iraq's political arena and media stage (the Rovian stage, that is) -- and literally slaughtered for their efforts -- it seems that BushCo should be drawn and quartered and burned on a pyre, all the while kept most alert to "enjoy" their own BBQing at the hands of a myriad of used, abused, misled, and abandoned Iraqi women.
