When sunlight travels through the atmosphere, blue light scatters more than the other colors, leaving a dominant yellow-orange hue to the transmitted light. The scattered light makes the sky blue; the transmitted light makes the sunset reddish orange.

The blue color of the sky is caused by the scattering of sunlight off the molecules of the atmosphere. This scattering, called Rayleigh scattering, is more effective at short wavelengths (the blue end of the visible spectrum). Therefore the light scattered down to the earth at a large angle with respect to the direction of the sun's light is predominantly in the blue end of the spectrum.

According to Tommy James himself, "when I wrote Crystal Blue, it was taken from the book of Revelation: the imagery of the new Jerusalem." But I prefer to think that the "blue crystal" is really the planet Earth. This song was a big hit in 1969, the year man landed on the moon, and television viewers saw a beautiful blue round crystal sphere photographed from space.
But if we want to consider further what "blue crystal" really has the power to persuade us to have world peace, consider the Silicon Solar Cell.

MSN Virtual Earth and Media Embargoes
MSN soft launched their long awaited Virtual Earth map site on Saturday. What's notable is that while he acknowledged the site is live, Microsoft's Robert Scoble didn't reference it by name or link to it. This leads me to believe there is a Microsoft media embargo out there for tomorrow a.m. It should be interesting to see which outlet breaks the story in the press. However, by soft launching it over the weekend, Microsoft put Virtual Earth (which rocks by the way) out there for all of us to blog about, basically jeopardizing any embargo that may exist.
