Yes, it's Manhattanhenge! Those magical days of the year
when the setting sun aligns itself perfectly with
Manhattan's crosstown streets in the same way that
the rising sun aligns with Stonehenge at the summer solstice.

This year, Manhattanhenge is May 29/30 and July 11/12.
Happily, the weather report calls for sunny skies on
the 29th with sunset at 8:18 pm.

Here's this year's email announcement
I received today from Neil DeGrassi,
the founder of Manhattanhenge:

Dear Museum Community,

It's that time of year again.... MANHATTANHENGE 2008

What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre- historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England. For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rose in perfect alignment with several of the stones,signaling the change of season.

For Manhattan, a place where evening matters more than morning, that special day comes on Thursday, May 29h this year, one of only two occasions when the Sun sets in exact alignment with the Manhattan grid, fully illuminating every single cross-street for the last fifteen minutes of daylight. The other day is Saturday, July 12th.

These two days give you a photogenic view with half the Sun above and half the Sun below the horizon -- on the grid. The day after May 29th (Friday, May 30th), and the day before July 12 (Friday, July 11) will also give you Manhattanhenge moments, but instead you will see the entire ball of the Sun on the horizon -- on the grid. My personal preference is the half-Sun.

As you may know, had Manhattan's grid been perfectly aligned with the geographic north-south line, then the days of Manhattanhenge would be the spring and autumn equinoxes, the only two days on the calendar when the Sun rises due-east and sets due-west. But Manhattan's street grid is rotated 30 degrees east from geographic north, shifting the days of alignment elsewhere into the calendar.

Note that any city crossed by a rectangular grid can identify days where the setting Sun aligns with their streets. But a closer look at such cities around the world shows them to be less than ideal for this purpose. Beyond the grid you need a clear view to the horizon, as we have over New Jersey. And tall buildings that line the streets create a kind of brick and steel channel to frame the setting Sun, creating a
striking photographic opportunity.

True, some municipalities have streets named after the Sun, like Sunrise Highway on Long Island and the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. But these roads are not perfectly straight. And the few times a year when the Sun aligns with one of their stretches of road, all you get is stalled traffic solar glare temporarily blinds drivers.

So Manhattanhenge may just be a unique urban phenomenon
in the world, if not the universe.

Note that a couple of years ago, an article in the New York Times identified this annual event as the "Manhattan Solstice". But of course, the word "solstice" translates from the Latin solstitium, meaning "stopped sun," in reference to the winter and summer solstices where the Sun's daily arc across the sky reaches its extreme southerly and northerly limits. Manhattanhenge comes about because the Sun's arc has *not* yet reached these limits, and is on route to them, as we catch a brief glimpse of the setting Sun along the canyons of our narrow streets.

IMPORTANT: For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.

A 19 year-old gamer becomes mayor of Oklahoma town

Like any red-blooded American teenager, John Tyler Hammons
digs rock music, fast cars, video games and...fiscal planning?

Apparently so. The AP reports that the University of Oklahoma freshman trounced 70 year-old Hershel McBride to become the mayor of Muskogee, Oklahoma, making it the first city in the nation to be governed by a self-admitted gamer.

But while he could own any of his peers at Halo 3, the fresh-faced leader is turning his sights on cleaning up the town's politics by establishing an independent ethics commission and locking down campaign finance reporting.

"I'm sure the (city) council will work with me on these issues," he said.
"I campaigned on this, and this is something I intend to push."

Tired of the same old political shenanigans, the townsfolk are backing their new man.

"He doesn't have the baggage. He doesn't owe anybody anything,"
said cafe owner Gary Armstrong. "It's sort of a fresh start for Muskogee."

Best known as the subject of country legend Merle Haggard's 1969 hit "Okie from Muskogee," the unassuming city of 38,000 is considered the archetype of virtuous, small town America, a "place where even squares can have a ball."

And now, so can gamers.

The election board must have really hated the former mayor, or they were really impressed by Hammons list of qualifications, that most likely included past titles held such as student body president, baseball team caption and other appropriate high school activities.

Hammons and McBride were forced to square off against each other in a runoff election for the nonpartisan post after both failed to secure 50 percent of the vote in a six-person election April 1.

Hammons will replace current Mayor Wren Stratton,
who did not seek re-election.

The college student is excited to fill his new role as mayor to the city of 38,000. "The public placing their trust in me is the greatest, humbling and most awesome experience I've ever had in my life." Hammons told the Associated Press.

I think rav3n is right on with what he said about the post.
Kaj the second commenter sounds not only way off base but as the poster put it "An Apologist" trying to justify the unjustifiable. So I went to my trusty Webster’s Dictionary and looked up the word Terrorism and here is the definition

1. Terrorism n. the use of force or threats to intimidate, ect, especially as a political policy.

2. a terrorizing; a use of terror and violence to intimidate, subjugate, ect. especially as a political weapon or policy

3. intimidation and subjugation so produced

By the dictionary it sounds as if Terrorized (the Poster) was absolutely right in his post. Cruise missiles and nuclear bombs sounds like a threat to intimidate and subjugate to me. These people don't have the power to be Terrorist, but China, Russia and the U.S.A do have the power to intimidate and subjugate and use the threat of force against smaller less powerful countries , so by correct definition these big three are the TERRORIST.
These little countries and people don't have the weapons or the power to be Terrorist, so they lash back out anyway possible in what others have falsely deemed TERRORISM but in true terms that realistically can be called HORRORIST.
For they have brought their Horror upon the Terrorist and so Horrified the Terrorist that the Terrorist have now deemed them Terrorist.

Here is why we call them Horrorist not Terrorist for they are not powerful enough to intimidate and subjugate like the real Terrorist (i.e. China, Russia, U.S.A.)

Horrorist = one who brings Horror
Horror = the strong feeling caused by something frightful or shocking (and they do this for sure)
bringing forth strong dislike, disgust (and they are disgusting),repugnance, shuddering, aversion or loathing
( and their is a strong aversion or loathing to them), very bad, ugly or disagreeable (now those are the words that better describes these people not terrorist)

Again a Terrorist = China, Russia, U.S.A
(describes these bad 3 very well and to the tee)

But a Horrorist = Osama bin Laden, IRA, ETA ect. ect.

and your skill in managing these operations
especially when it must employ the constant use
of diverse stratagem pretty well FUCKING SUCKS!!

SORRY but you got to look at this thing
from a Military standpoint BOYZ!!
And right now you are not cutting the mustard!!
First without some order your just a MOB
and a mob always loses to trained well disciplined
strategically precise, tactically superior army or police unit.
