The US government continues its unchecked expansion of domestic spying powers. Several recent reports document this expansion, which is taking place on many fronts, involving the military, federal intelligence agencies, and local police forces.

The NSA program, which involves the warrantless monitoring of emails and other communications in violation of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), has received the most attention. In spite of its blatant illegality, the program continues, with no serious move by either political party to stop it. The Bush administration has openly flouted decisions by Congress and the courts, asserting that warrantless spying on US citizens is part of the president’s powers as commander-in-chief in the “war on terror.”

The NSA program is only one component of a much broader policy undermining basic democratic and constitutional rights in the United States, all justified by a supposedly ubiquitous terrorist threat. However, their real purpose is to vastly expand the powers of the government to monitor and repress internal dissent under conditions of mounting social tension and political opposition to the policies of the Bush administration.

Taken together, these developments provide a picture of a government that is systematically laying the foundations for a police state.

The Justice Department released statistics documenting a sharp increase in the number of court-approved warrants the FBI has sought and received as part of the procedures established by the FISA Act. Way back in 2005, the FBI received 2,072 warrants from the FISA court to conduct searches and electronic surveillance, up 18 percent from 2004.

Significantly, the FISA court did not reject any of the government’s applications for warrants. The supposed difficulty of receiving warrants through the FISA procedures has been cited as one of the principal justifications for the warrantless NSA spying program, which is being carried out outside of any judicial oversight.

In addition to the FISA warrants, the government reported that the FBI issued 9,254 “national security letters” to US businesses and institutions to demand information on over 3,500 US citizens and residents. National security letters are used by the FBI to get personal records, including everything from Internet activity to records of purchases. They do not require any court review. The ability of the FBI to issue these letters was significantly expanded by the Patriot Act, passed shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Mid-Atlantic regional factory activity crashed to an 18-year low in October, a survey showed on Thursday, adding to the grim toll the last month of credit turmoil has taken on the economy.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank said its business activity index slumped unexpectedly hard to -37.5 in October from 3.8 in September. That was its lowest since October 1990.

"The data, put simply, were horrendous coming out of the Philadelphia Fed region today," said Dana Saporta, economist at Dresdner Kleinwort in New York.

"This reading is consistent with the recession we are in
and probably have probably been in for a while."

Factory activity dropped in November to its weakest level since the 1981-1982 recession and construction spending slumped in October, data showed on Monday, fanning fears of a protracted economic downturn.

"The U.S. economy has entered an ugly recession. Against this background, we expect the Fed to cut the target rate to 0.5 percent on December 16," said Harm Bandholz, an economist at UniCredit Markets and Investment Banking in New York.

"Amid a faltering economy and mounting deflation concerns, not even this historically low level has to be the end of the Fed's easing cycle."

The Institute for Supply Management's index of factory activity fell to 36.2 in November from 38.9 in October. It was the weakest since 1982. A reading below 50 shows contraction.

Highlighting the deepening U.S. economic slump, an inflation gauge within the ISM report hit its lowest in nearly six decades, new orders dropped to their lowest level since 1980 and an employment index was at the weakest level since 1991.

U.S. Treasury debt prices surged as signs of the worsening economic outlook boosted their safe-haven appeal and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke hinted the central bank could become a buyer to push interest rates down further.

Oil's price has plunged, but don't expect lower bill at the grocery checkout line

Worries over a global recession have pushed the price of oil to its lowest in over a year. Don't expect the same for a bottle of beer, a tube of toothpaste, or a box of cereal.

You can blame "sticky" prices.
That's what analysts call it when companies slap higher prices on products and keep them there even though the rationale for the price hikes --
such as soaring oil prices -- is gone.

The falling cost of oil could help companies pad their profit margins as they pay less to make and transport goods. But it won't mean a break on the average grocery bill.

That was the case last month, when consumer prices were
essentially flat, even as oil prices plunged.

The core Consumer Price Index, which eliminates food and energy prices, rose 0.1 percent, according to U.S. Labor Department figures. That was only about half the jump economists had expected, but it still lagged far behind the drop in oil prices. Crude oil has plunged more than 53 percent from its record high of $147.27 between July and October.

But that doesn't mean fare prices will drop back to levels
where they were before the spike in oil prices.

Infinite sequences of justifications have been often dismissed as a somehow inadequate way to justify beliefs. That justification requires infinite sequences can be argued by an argument (A) around the following lines (from 1-3 to 4):

1. A belief is justified only if a justified belief is a reason for it.

2. There are justified beliefs.

3. The proper ancestral of the reason-relation is irreflexive.

4. There is an infinite sequence of justified beliefs each of which is a reason for its predecessor.

Attempts to resist 4 (and A) are motivated by taking 4 to be unacceptable. The argument can then be countered by some variety of foundationalism (rejecting 1), some variety of coherentism (rejecting 3) or some variety of skepticism (rejecting 2).

Recently, infinitism has been regarded with more sympathetic eyes (Black 1996, 2003, Klein 1999). The groudwork done has been to establish that the most frequent criticisms to the idea of a justifying infinite sequence are not compelling. (For example, that we cannot have an infinite number of justified beliefs or that our mind cannot hold infinite sequences.) This shows that the dismissal of infinte sequences of justifications has been too hasty. To complete the job of rendering 4 more plausible, one may think that an example of a reasonable infinite sequence of justification has to be given. Now, here is an example of what I take to be an acceptable (and in fact of the sort that is quite present in everyday life) infinite sequence of justifications:

Each belief in the sequence is justified by the next one and yet every belief has to be present if S is to justifiedly belief that 'x is red'. The justiifcation of one belief requires the justification of all the beliefs in the sequence. If this is an infinite sequence of justifications invoked to justify an observational report, it is reasonable to consider that we make use of infinite sequences of justifications all the time and that most cases of justification seem to invoke an infinite regress. Infinite sequences of justifications seem to be not only possible but abundant.

Infinite sequences of justfications like the one above bear resemblence to what is a commonplace about truth that, in its turn, is related to what Tarski called the material condition for adequacy in a theory of truth. It is generally accepted that

Maintaining something (or that something is true) is often thought of as maintaining an infinite set of claims. The example of infinite sequence of justifications above can be visible from this commonplace about truth if we consider what we do when we establish that something is true. We can say that we do so by establishing the truth of an infinite sequence of claims:

My example of an infinite sequence of justification is readily presentable in a recursive manner. I believe this is a good candidate necessary condition for adequate infinite sequences. Klein (1999) considers the objection that there is an element of arbitrariness in infinitism as we can place any claim in an infinite chain of justifications. This can be countered by saying that not all infinite sequences of justifications are adequate justifiers of a claim: only some infinite sequences of justifications are adequate. The next step is to present necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence to be adequate––which is, of course, an enormous and maybe impossible task that would possibly amount to solve all the epistemological questions at once. I cannot present those conditions but I conjecture that a good necessary condition for an infinite sequence to be adequate is that it is presentable in a recursive manner.

Recursively expressible infinite sequences of justifications can help us deal with the old objection to infinitism that takes infinite sequences to be infinite deferral of justification––justification is never presented, it is at best only promised. Presented in a recursive manner, the infinite sequence is all there and the justification is in front of is––infinte sequences of justification are understood as actual (Cantorian) infinute sequences. The justification is therefore provided by the sequence and nothing is left for an infinite deferral; if all the justification needed for the belief is in the infinite sequence, one needs no infinite time or infinite number of steps to attain it. Justification, then, is not provisional but rather complete. Recursive infinite sequences, however, can be more complex and can involve more interesting (or at least more surprising) justifications but they have the advantage of coming to view in a finite number of steps; namely the recursive clauses.

A Note on Internalism

It is reasonable to assume that we often infer using infinite sets of premises. Consider what is often said about the famous (Carrollian) infinite regress requirement for Modus Ponens:

Premise 3. If 1 and 2 then q

Premise 4. If 1, 2 and 3 then q
etc.

Conclusion. q

We claim that a conclusion can be drawn from 1 and 2 only because we take the meaning of the words––the connectives––to be established somewhere else and not in the argument. The meaning of these words constitute what makes the rule of inference an effective constraint on what we think. This constraint is often thought as coming from an external source––external to the argument itself. This appeal to external sources for constraint is made unnecessary if we assume that Modus Ponens, for instance, involves an infinite set of premises.

The analogy I want to draw is that, in a similar way, an infinite sequence of justification provide all justification needed and could satisfy all the (epistemological) internalist cravings for reasons. There is nothing that is not available to the thinker in the process of justification––everything is there, open to her view and scrutinizable in the form of the recursive clauses. There is, therefore, no need to appeal to true reliable reporters, to truths about the world or to whatever could capture the (epistemological) externalist fancy. Infinitism can prove to be the ultimate resource for an internalist epistemology.

On August 9, 1991, Danny Casolaro had arranged to meet with a source regarding the trading of documents revolving around the INSLAW case. Casolaro secured room 517 at a motel in Martinsburg, Virginia and was found on August 10, 1991 deceased.

Casolaro died from multiple large contusions, including one to the head, and wounds to the wrists, which included eight slashes on one wrist in which tendons were cut through to the bone,the slashes on the wrists were unhesitant which is rare in self-inflicted wounds.

Casolaro's papers, notes and other personal records
he had brought with him to Martinsburg were missing.

authors note: Casolaro's main contention was that there existed 8 members of the Reagan administration that was operating according to their own rules, Casolaro called these 8 men 'The Octopus'.
