The Beginning- The Arena Eternal Story

Early on, shortly after the creation of the Arena Eternal, it was discovered that gladiators possessed an energy source which was passed from one gladiator to another when the gladiator was killed. It was soon found that this energy or "mana" could be used to augment a gladiator’s battle skills. Some gladiators were able to adapt to this terrific style of fighting and have since become known as Gods of War. As the gods engaged in battle with one another, they were able to hone their skills and gained the ability to cast spells which drew upon the mana they collected from their victims. As the gods continued to war, they began to better understand the properties of mana which could not be created or destroyed, but changed from one form of energy to another. Eventually, one god named Mishikala became power mad and desiring to acquire mana won by other gladiators, he cast a spell which blocked mana from being transferred to the victor immediately after his kill. It has been several centuries since Mishikala cast his spell to prevent the transference of mana. In that time The Gods of War have become incredibly skilled in the use of mana and may wield countless spells to destroy their opponent and take his mana.

The Arena was a liminal site...
where fundamental human conflicts were symbolically fought.

Within the community of gladiators they, like all Romans, formed collegia and shared a cult worship of the god Hercules. In fact, in a bizarre way, the gladiatorial schools seem to have provided their inhabitants with a vital, united and committed community (admittedly predicated on the possibility that one might have to kill another). Gladiators were trained not merely how to fight well, but how to make an efficient killing blow and, if defeated, how to offer one's body for the most effective coup de grace. Finally, at issue in every gladiatorial contest, was the most basic question of life and death.

It may seem perplexing that beings with such a fragile grip on their mortal coil would fight and die so valiantly, even when they had everything to lose. I personally brought forth a theory: that humans fight because they must. The desire to fight, to challenge, to compete, to affect the events and things surrounding them, is an innate part of all mankind. Humans seem to understand their own mortality. While some run from their impending death or attempt to live in denial of it, there have always been those who embrace death, and by doing so, often elude its grasp. Some of your greatest historical figures lived their lives by standing boldly in the shadow of the grim reaper.

To paraphrase one of your prophets, those that embraced their lives lost them. Over time many other noble brave and valiant death devotee warriors joined me, each one renowned for their Strength, Toughness, Perception and well orchestrated strategies & tactics well planned in advance for every contingency. Soon after my theory gained acceptance, & others began to view us with fascination . We began to notice select individuals like us who not only survived, but constantly dominated in certain-death situations. These were often the unknown soldiers, the unsung heroes of their time.

When they did die however, their deaths served to further the cause they fought for during their lives. We began documenting these brave, noble warriors to try to observe patterns. Unfortunately, as our glad-network grew, so did the interests of others in us and in our work. Thus, Liberty's Eternal Gladiator Arena was brought forth out from the realm of shades and shadows. Thus, the greatest warriors have been brought here after their valiant service and near death experiences within and from without of their own homelands. We then came together to Battle ourselves to see who was the 'better than you' best, they revolved around a basic round robin system, but a warriors truce was eventually forged...

Remember When...
Several members of the U.S. Senate opposed McCarthy well before 1953. One example is U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith, a Maine Republican (and the only woman in the Senate at the time) who delivered her "Declaration of Conscience" on June 1, 1950, criticizing both the Executive and Legislative branches' use of smear tactics without mentioning McCarthy or anyone else by name. So on June 1, 1950, she gave her "Declaration of Conscience" on the floor of the Senate, earning McCarthy's permanent ire and the nickname "Moscow Maggie" from his staff.

When Smith rose to deliver her fifteen-minute speech in the Senate chamber, McCarthy sat two rows behind her. Smith began her brief remarks by denouncing the fact that some members were turning the Senate into "a forum of hate and character assassination." She called for a renewal of "the right to independent thought" and a return to the principles of the Republican party as "the champion of unity and prudence." Her party should base its opposition to the Democrats on "proved cases" rather than "unproved charges." Smith concluded with a five-point "Declaration of Conscience," in which she was joined by six Republican colleagues.

After Smith finished, although she had not mentioned McCarthy by name, she fully expected him to respond. Instead, McCarthy quietly left the chamber. A few senators spoke in praise of her remarks, but for the most part the Senate remained silent, fearing to engage McCarthy in further recriminations. The mail, however, showed an eight-to-one approval for Smith's stand. Newspaper editorials endorsed her position, and numerous organizations awarded her recognition for her courageous stand in favor of civil liberties against the politics of fear. The next time that President Truman came to the Capitol for lunch, he invited Margaret Chase Smith to join him. "Mrs. Smith," he told her, "your Declaration of Conscience was one of the finest things that has happened here in Washington in all my years in the Senate and the White House."

Her speech, although it did not produce immediate backlash, was the beginning of the end for McCarthy. He had successfully intervened in Senate elections defeating key Democrats, but in 1954, when he attempted to challenge her seat, the Maine voters rejected the effort. McCarthy's allies took every occasion to smear Senator Smith. But in 1954 she had the satisfaction of casting a vote for McCarthy's censure and effectively ending his campaign of falsehood and intimidation--what she had so effectively denounced as a political attempt to ride "the Four Horsemen of Calumny--Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear."
