Terror fears loom over subway cell phone service

Despite mounting evidence from Spain to Pakistan that al-Qaeda is training its operatives to use cell phones to detonate bombs by remote control, cities around the world are taking steps to wire subway tunnels to receive mobile signals, reports the San Diego Union Tribune.

"A range of homeland security specialists and lawmakers acknowledge that wiring subway tunnels for cell service increases the risk that the system may be used against the public. But most also say that, on balance, the security benefits of extending the wireless communications network underground probably outweigh the cost of that increased risk.

"It's a conundrum," said P.J. Crowley, a former National Security Council official who is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank. "In ensuring that we have the ability to communicate in a crisis, we're ensuring that our adversary can do the same thing. But the answer is to keep people who want to do us harm away from our borders, rather than eliminating a valued asset for people who day in, day out live within our borders."

The use of cell phone ringers to detonate bombs apparently goes back to the Irish Republican Army, but the technique has been enthusiastically embraced by Islamist terrorists. Recent bombings in Israel, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Pakistan have used the technique, which gives a militant precise control over when the explosives will go off from a position of remote safety."

Thus The expression “halcyon days” comes from this myth
and figuratively means a time of peace and tranquility.

Peace on Earth (or Sea) In the midst of all this commotion, there’s yet another multi-day observance that often falls through the cracks: halcyon days, which begin a week before the winter solstice and end a week after. Halcyon days are not a holiday as such, but more of a mythological tradition. According to legend, this two-week period is associated with unusually calm seas; hence the common meanings of halcyon as “quiet” or “peaceful,” and by extension, “prosperous.” I could not imagine any two weeks of the year less suited to such a description, but the term has been around longer than most of our December holidays.

Greek mythology recounts the story of the goddess Alcyone (or Halcyone), daughter of Aeolus, god of the winds. Alcyone married a mortal king named Ceyx (who seeks), who drowned at sea in a storm. Such was Alcyone’s love for her husband that she threw herself into the ocean after him. Seeing this, the gods transformed Alcyone and Ceyx into birds. Thereafter, Aeolus kept the winds calm on the sea for a week before and a week after the solstice, enabling the birds to build nests on the water and lay their eggs there. Since that time, many people have believed that the kingfisher has a calming effect on the sea.

Back at home, Halcyone was unaware that her husband was dead. She spent her days weaving him a new robe. At night she prayed to Hera for his safe return. Hera heard her prayers. It saddened her to hear Halcyone pray for one already dead. She pitied the poor woman and wanted her to know the truth. She ordered Somnus (som ' nus), the god of sleep, to go to her. "Go to Halcyone in a dream," she told Somnus. "Tell her that her husband will never return. It will be better for her to know the truth than to live in vain hope."

Somnus gave this task to his son, Morpheus (mor' fee us), who was able to take the form of any human being. Morpheus quickly flew to Halcyone's house. He changed his appearance so that he looked like her dead husband. Naked and wet with sea water, he visited Halcyone in a dream. "My dearest wife, hear my words," he whispered. "Do you not know who I am? Does death make me look so different? I have come to tell you that I am no longer alive. My home is now with Hades in the underworld. Weep for me. Mourn for me. But be certain that I can never return to you."

Halcyone called to her husband in her sleep. Then she awoke with a start. "Ceyx!" she cried. But no one was there. Her room was empty. Halcyone knew then that the dream was the truth. Her husband was dead. "I cannot live without you!" she wept. "I will not live without you!"

Halcyone ran down to the shore. The sun was just beginning to rise. She looked out at the sea where she had last seen her husband alive. After standing for a while, she noticed something floating toward her. At first she thought it was just an old piece of wood. But as it came closer, she realized it was a body being carried by the waves. Halcyone watched in horror as the corpse came nearer and nearer. She was about to turn away when she caught a glimpse of its face.

Ceyx! My husband!" Filled with grief, Halcyone threw herself into the sea to join him. But she never even touched the water. Instead, she found herself flying over the waves. Her body had formed wings. She was covered with feathers. The gods had changed Halcyone into a bird a kingfisher. She flew down toward the body of her husband. At that moment he too became a bird. Together, the two lovers flew off over the sea.

Thus each year the female kingfisher lays her eggs in a floating nest. For seven days she guards the eggs until they hatch. It is said that for these seven days the sea is always calm and quiet. These days are called halcyon (hal' see on) days.

The Kingfisher Days that The Greek words from which the name halcyon is apparently derived mean, roughly, “sea” and “conceive.” Over the centuries, the term came to refer both to the kingfisher (an actual bird) and to the mythical bird that nested on the sea and mysteriously calmed the winds around the time of the winter solstice. The latter usage extended the story of Alcyone to account for the calm seas considered common in late December, but also eventually gave rise to a belief among ancient sailors that storms could not occur at sea during the halcyon days.

Nowadays, when we use the expression “halcyon days,” it’s almost always a way of saying “the good old days” or “when life was easy” or “back during the dot-com boom.” More often than not, the expression refers sentimentally to a bygone time that we remember as being much more tranquil and prosperous than it really was, so the mythological origin of the term is rather apt. I’ve never heard anyone speak of looking forward to halcyon days, nor have I ever received a “Happy Halcyon Days” card on December 14. But a few months from now when you’re putting away decorations, repairing broken toys, and looking at unpleasant credit card bills, you can look back at these two frenzied weeks of late December and reminisce, “Those were the halcyon days.”—
