THE LIFE OF RILEY AS "SPIRITUAL ILLUSION" I know what I think and see contradicts everything practical logic and society would advise. The world is upside down. I cannot follow or listen to it because it is fake and misguided.
Spirituality is wonderful and helpful yet, it has pitfalls and holds a concept of a higher self that could create a deceptive ideal. I am disappointed with spirituality and want to work with this disappointment. I am also suspicious of therapeutic disciplines. Although they can be helpful, I have no expectations from them and need someone who sees beyond these useful, yet deceptive, techniques. These are my concerns... To me, today's spiritual development has become a building up of an awakened state through spiritual techniques. Self awareness and self-consciousness are pillars of this false spirituality. Insight is only possible when there are gaps in these vane attempts to "know thy self." We have an ambition to create security, entertain ourselves and avoid irritation in pursuit of physical and emotional comfort, security, and a better self. We adopt systems to provide identities, rules of action, and an interpretation of the world to neutralize threats and irritations. We use spiritual and psychological disciplines to maintain an awareness of the self. Yoga, meditation, prayer, various psychotherapies, drugs, and even spirituality are converted into the use of upholding a sense of self.
When we achieve self awareness and self-consciousness through spiritual techniques, true spiritual development is unlikely because mental habits develop. Retreats, isolation, high people, or religion and spirituality provide rationalization for creating security and a shield from irritation. Then, we take these ideologies too seriously and struggle to find answers through them. Evaluating or deciding that we should or shouldn't do this or that is associating knowledge, or a practice, with a labeling mechanism that pits them against each other, leading to the notion that I will do this to achieve that. This separates ourselves from what we really are.
Thinking, I should do this and avoid doing that, takes us away from the simple truth of what we are. The desire for a higher, more spiritual version of comfort, peace, knowledge, religion, virtue, judgment, control, or whatever is sought, is just a way of upholding a false sense of self we think is real. And, within these tenets we put our faith, and now faith is connected to and in communication with the self. This kind of faith lacks inspiration. Situations are still dealt with from a level of fear because there is a self involved. This should give evidence that this kind of faith is merely an abstraction of the mind requiring a repeated checking of the self and its tenets it holds dear.
Without true faith, we fear disappointment and space. We are afraid we will not be able to anchor our selves to solid ground, and thus lose our self. With faith not based on preconceived ideas, we can look disappointment in the face and work with it. Disappointment is a vehicle to freedom, which is merely not struggling. Yet, we struggle to avoid the disturbing scene of our world. we think every step of our path should be on a red carpet. If we are open to embracing all of the world as it is, not just what we pick and choose, we can identify with the lowest of the low and acknowledge our raw and despicable condition and the negativity that rides along. Then, there is nothing to fear. Until then, we seek or cling to our high and mighty ideals, fear of falling off the pedestal we created for our higher self.
