The first charge accused Ney of conspiring to commit "honest services" fraud, a combination of mail and wire fraud often used in public corruption cases. The second count charges Ney with not revealing his gifts from Abramoff on financial disclosure forms.
His statement read like a cautionary tale for others who might be tempted by the allure of the Capitol. "I never acted to enrich myself or to get things I shouldn't, but over time, I allowed myself to get too comfortable with the way things have been done in Washington DC for too long," it said.
Ney is the latest in a string of once-influential men convicted in a scandal that so far has caught several lobbyists and two members of the Bush administration.
Abramoff, the Republican super-lobbyist, admitted guilt in January after secretly cooperating with prosecutors for weeks.
Two former aides to Tom DeLay, the former House majority leader,
have also pleaded guilty, as has Ney's former chief of staff.
Additionally, Roger Stillwell, a former Interior Department official,
pleaded guilty in August to a misdemeanor charge for not reporting
tickets he received from Abramoff.
And former White House official David Safavian, who had been the Bush administration's top procurement official, was convicted of covering up his dealings with Abramoff. He is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 27.

In his first State of the Union address in January 2002, George W. Bush offered up the expression “axis of evil” to describe the governments of Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Critics jumped on the US president for his belligerent rhetoric. But the problem with Mr Bush’s formulation was not his use of the term “evil”, an apt description of the regimes of Saddam Hussein, the Iranian mullahs and Kim Jong-il. The real issue was with the “axis” part. With his reference to the axis powers of the second world war, Mr Bush suggested some sort of alliance among them. His turn of phrase indicated a unitary problem and implied that, in taking on one, America would be dealing with all three.
Nearly five years later, we can see the damage caused by the president’s too-cute slogan and the muddled thinking behind it. By failing to distinguish clearly among the overlapping threats presented by rogue states, nuclear proliferators and supporters of terrorism, Mr Bush helped bring his own nightmare to life. Thanks to his foreign policy, many of the world’s dictators now function as a kind of anti-American co-operative, in a way they did not when he made that speech.

The call from General Sir Richard Dannatt that British forces should leave Iraq "sometime soon" has met with overwhelming support on the unofficial Army Rumour Service website, which includes forums where officers can air their views anonymously.
Many express shock about the frankness of his words and there are several references to Sir Richard’s "moral" courage in speaking his mind, as well as calls for the Prime Minister to take heed of his remarks.
"...I am thoroughly heartened by this and have the beginnings [sic] of a thaw in the cynicism which has dogged my service thinking since 2003," admits Jim_P_Pulfrew.
"I hope Blair is listening," says user Nigegilb. "Sir Richard has made the call and said it how it is. Good on him. Stand by for incoming. Getting out of Iraq is essential if [Afghanistan] is going to work in the long run. God knows what will happen to Iraq, not sure it will be any worse though. He made the point that we were never invited in we kicked the door in.
Nigegilb asks: "Can someone close to Sir Richard tell him that if he gets sacked he should run for office against whoever is the PM at the time. He will win by a landslide."

Many say the comments were long overdue and call for the Army to gather in support of Sir Richard should his position come under threat. "After years and years, AT LAST someone at the top, who makes the headline on the news, has had the b***s to stand up and be counted," says Brandt. "If he gets the sack, watch out for fireworks- If he has had the balls to stand up for us, we should do the same."

All this criticism follows months of political trouble for Blair, whose government has been damaged by a war that was unpopular from the beginning and has grown more so as the violence grinds on.
A rebellion in the Labour Party trying to oust Blair forced his reluctant announcement last month that he will resign within a year.
